When water is worth testing, and when it is not
Soil gas is the dominant pathway in almost every home. Waterborne radon is real but secondary, and it only applies to properties on a private well — municipal supplies are treated and stored in ways that let dissolved radon escape long before the water reaches a tap.
So the sequence matters: test the air first. If the level is elevated, a soil-gas mitigation system addresses it, and in the large majority of cases the number comes down and the question is closed. Water becomes worth investigating when an air result stays high after a working system, on a property drawing from its own well.
That situation is most common on acreage east and north of the city — Falcon, Peyton and the rural parts of El Paso County, where private wells are the norm. Treatment is either aeration, which strips the gas and vents it outside, or granular activated carbon, which adsorbs it. Which one fits depends on the concentration and the household's water use.
